The Contemporary collection includes a number of beautiful shaker style kitchens in wood and painted doors.

The Shakers were a religious sect formed in
America in the late 18th century. They were a
breakaway group from the Quakers and got their
name due to the enthusiastic dancing they
undertook during prayer meetings. We know
them best, of course, for their furniture styling.
Shakers believed that furniture should be
functional, not extravagant and the style they
invented is enduring.

There are plenty of shaker style kitchens to
choose from in our Contemporary collection. All
have an understated elegance from the cool
colours of mussel and olive in Buckingham to the
natural wood finishes of Juniper and Henderson.
Originally Shakers used natural wood for their worktops but for a kitchen that needs less maintenance granite and wood is an ideal solution,it looks great and there is no need to spend time periodically oiling the tops to prevent splitting and discolouration. Indeed, if they had the tools to work stone the Shakers would of approved, it fits with their ethos of beauty is in utility. You can see a good example of this in the Solva light oak shaker kitchen in our gallery.

Compliment your new shaker kitchen with a mix of granite and wood worktops for an authentic look that fits in any home.

One of the joys of this style of kitchen is that it
sits easily in any style of building, the simple
lines and muted tones fit well with old or new
properties and you won't have the angst of
worrying about it dating or going out of fashion.
Complete the look with square backed, three panel chairs with wooden or fabric seat covers and a peg board for hanging knick knacks, dog leads etc. Bigger versions of these were used by Shakers to hang chairs from when they were not being used thereby increasing usable living space.

Incidentely that is where the phrase "board and lodgings" came from, at one time the kitchen table was a board that rested on your knees and together with the chairs was hung on the wall to increase living space during the day.
