When the warm weather hits, there's nothing better than adding a few ice cubes to your drink or treating yourself to an ice cream from the freezer. However, if your freezer isn't working correctly, this can cause a lot of issues during the summer.

There are a number of things that can affect how your freezer works, which can result in food partially defrosting; putting you and your family at risk of illness. This will also waste a lot of money and could lead to your appliance breaking down completely.

Have a clear out

To start with, you should clear out your freezer and get rid of anything that has been sat at the back of a drawer forever. Any leftovers that aren't dated should go in the bin, as should any half-open packets that have been hanging around for months.

Defrost it

It is a good idea to introduce some order when it comes to putting food in your freezer. Not only is this likely to create more space, it will also save time when you're looking for things and ensure air is circulating correctly because you aren't cramming everything in wherever it will fit.

Fill the empty space

If there is a lot of empty space in your freezer, it is a good idea to fill so the appliance doesn't have to kick out a lot of cold air to keep the temperature stable. Keeping your freezer working efficiently can be as easy as freezing bottles of water.

Pop in a thermometer

In order to ensure your freezer is working correctly, put a thermometer in the draw. This will allow you to check that it is always at the optimum temperature. If the temperature increases, you know there is something wrong so you can try to address it before it gets worse.

Continuous increases in temperature could mean that there is a serious issue, so get someone to look at your appliance before it gives up the ghost completely.
